Marie (Petel) Johnston, 91, of Bridgeville, formerly of McDonald, passed away on Monday, July 18th, 2022 in her daughter’s home.
Mrs. Johnston was born on August 19th, 1930, in Carnegie, a daughter of the late
John and Pauline (Cargavic) Petel.
Marie was a hard worker all of her life and truly the epitome of strength and determination. She was a stellar employee of A&P Grocers, a loyal employee for Mayview Hospital and a meticulous, in-demand cleaner for many local homeowners. She came from humble beginnings but through her tenacity was able to enjoy some nice things in life. As much as Marie worked, she did find time for some fun. She and Melbourne spent many years in Slippery Rock enjoying camping and boating. She was at her happiest dancing and enjoying polka music. And, she had a few signature desserts in the kitchen that the family enjoyed regularly– coconut cream pie, lemon meringue pie and cream puffs. Mrs. Johnston was fun, respected and loved dearly by her family and others. At the age of almost 92, she saw many decades of change. The last few years of her life offered her some of the best memories. She lived with her daughter Charlene and enjoyed a lot of time with her family, had many good times and was still engaging in new experiences. Her 91st birthday party had her on her feet dancing (with some assistance) to her own private accordion player. She will be missed dearly.
Surviving is her daughter, Charlene (the late Richard) Kalan, grandaughters, Chantel (Keith) Goldstrohm and Stacey (Gary) Dranikoski, great grandchildren, Alec, Brent, Kaylin, Ava and Lauryn.
Marie is preceded in death by her loving husband, Melbourne Johnston (2005), siblings, Clara Smith, Agnes Svilha, Anna Marcella Zarnick, Andy Petel, Stanly Lynn, Jack Lynn and Helen Garcia.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 2-5pm at Thomas-Little Funeral Service, Inc. 314 W Lincoln Ave., McDonald (924-926-2800).
A Blessing Service will be held following the viewing at 5 p.m. in the funeral home. Inurnment will occur at a later date.
