Obituary for Helena F. Mitchell (Franklin)

Helena F. (Franklin) Mitchell, 95, of Oakdale, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022, in Country Meadows.

Helena was born on March 13, 1927, in McDonald, a daughter of the late Leon J. and Maria (Pletincks) Franklin, Sr.

Upon her graduation from North Fayette High School in 1944, Mrs. Mitchell attended Grace Martin’s Business School where she received secretarial training. As a secretary, Mrs. Mitchell worked for the Frick Coke Company, Travelers’ Insurance, and for 20 years as the administrative secretary for four different West Allegheny School District superintendents. Helena was a great woman of faith. She was a devout member of Montours Presbyterian Church and a former member of Good Shepherd Church, where she played the organ and directed the choir for 25 years. Helena knew the importance of worship music in the church and was so proud to provide that to the congregation. In her free time Helena enjoyed playing card games, especially bridge with her family and friends. Helena played at least three times a week and she loved every minute of it. More than anything, Helena loved being with her family. Her daughters, grandchildren, and great grandson were her whole world.

Surviving are her daughters, Susan (Barry) Macek, Jean (Tim) Opfermann, grandchildren; Laura (Tony Kozinko), Tim (Jody) Opfermann, and Steve (Heather) Opfermann, and great grandson, Garrett Opfermann.

Along with her parents, Helena is preceded in death by her loving husband, William E. Mitchell (1986).

Friends and family will be received on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 4-8 p.m. at Thomas-Little Funeral Service, Inc. and Crematory, 5000 Noblestown Road, Oakdale (724-693-2800). A Service will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will follow at Robinson Run Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the West Allegheny Food Pantry, P.O. Box 527, Imperial, Pennsylvania 15126. The family wishes to thank the staff of Country Meadows and Bridges Hospice for the loving care they provided for Helena.
